About Us

At the Soil Sensor Lab, IIT Kharagpur, we are pioneering AI-driven, non-invasive soil sensing technologies to revolutionize soil and crop testing for precision agriculture. Our research focuses on developing optical, thermal, and electrochemical sensors integrated with machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) for rapid, cost-effective soil property estimation, particularly benefiting resource-poor farmers. We specialize in portable soil sensors like PXRF, DRS, and smartphone-integrated imaging devices, enabling real-time soil fertility assessment, digital soil mapping, and AI-powered fertilizer recommendations. Our lab houses cutting-edge equipment, including hyperspectral cameras, Vis-NIR spectroradiometers, FTIR, PXRF, and smartphone-based soil testing tools, fostering innovation in deep learning-based soil characterization, soil image processing, and user-friendly sensor applications. With traditional soil testing being time-consuming and inaccessible, our mission is to provide on-the-spot, sensor-based solutions for sustainable agriculture. We welcome ambitious and hard-working students to join our interdisciplinary research team and contribute to the future of AI-powered soil health monitoring and precision farming.
